Rizal, The Greatest Filipino Hero

This textbook focuses on Dr. Jose Rizal, the greatest hero of the Filipinos who died for his own people but his death influenced other Asian nations as well to exercise their rights as a free people.

To inculcate the real Filipino values which Dr. Jose Rizal demonstrated, the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) ordered all schools, colleges and universities, public or private to include in their curricula the course on the life, works, and writings of Dr. Jose Rizal, particularly his novels, “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo.” This order is better known as the “Rizal Law” which was prepared by the late Senator Jose P. Laurel Sr., chairman of the Senate Committee on Education during his sponsorship of the measure on June 12, 1956 under Republic Act No. 1425.

This book complies with the patriotic goals set by the Board on National Education to understand and appreciate the qualities, behavior, and character of Rizal as well as his thoughts and ideals, and foster the development of moral character, personal discipline, citizenship, and vocational efficiency.

It is hoped that the students would be inspired to love our country and their fellow Filipinos more because they can interpret for themselves the usefulness of Rizal’s ideas.
