Tiempo was graduate school dean at Silliman University for 11 years, chairman of the Department of English and Literature for 13, founder and director of the National Writers Workshop and the Program in Writing for 20 years, and teacher of fiction and criticism in 2 American schools for 4 years. Holder of the prestigious Guggenheim and Rockefeller writing fellowships, he holds a bachelor's degree from Silliman, an M.F.A. from the State University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Denver.
